Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms
By creating an account, using the API, or using the web interface at lsd.goodw1n.ca, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
You must be at least 18 years old to use this service. We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify registered users by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance. If you disagree with updated terms, you may cancel your account.
2. What the Service Is (and Is Not)
LSD2LatLong converts Canadian Legal Subdivision (LSD) identifiers to geographic polygon coordinates based on the Dominion Land Survey (DLS) grid system. It is provided as a web interface and a developer API, operated by a single individual on personal infrastructure.
Coordinate Accuracy Disclaimer
Coordinates returned by this service are derived from mathematical calculations based on the rules of the Dominion Land Survey system. They are not based on registered survey plans, legal land descriptions recorded at Alberta Land Titles, or any other authoritative cadastral dataset. Results are approximate. The actual surveyed position of any LSD, section, or township boundary may differ from the calculated position due to terrain variations, survey measurement tolerances, road allowance adjustments, and historical resurveying.
This service is intended for general information, navigation assistance, and data analysis purposes only. It is not suitable for:
- •Legal land transactions or property boundary disputes
- •Engineering or construction projects
- •Regulatory compliance filings with the Alberta Energy Regulator or other agencies
- •Any application where positional accuracy better than approximately 50 metres is required
Always verify coordinates against registered survey plans or authoritative GIS datasets before making decisions with legal, financial, or safety implications.
No uptime guarantee. This service is operated on personal hardware by an individual developer. No uptime, availability, or performance guarantees are provided. The service may be temporarily unavailable, permanently discontinued, or significantly changed at any time without notice.
3. Accounts and API Keys
- •One account per person. You are responsible for all activity under your account.
- •You must provide a valid email address at registration.
- •Keep your password and API keys confidential. Do not share API keys or commit them to public repositories.
- •API keys may be revoked for Terms violations without refund.
- •Notify us promptly of any unauthorized access to your account.
- •You may request account deletion at any time. Account data (saved places, usage history) will be removed within 30 days. Anonymized aggregate usage data may be retained.
4. Billing and Subscriptions
Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. Your payment card information is held by Stripe and is never stored by this service.
- •Subscriptions are billed monthly in advance on your signup date and automatically renew each month unless cancelled.
- •Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Access continues until then.
- •No prorated refunds are provided for the remaining portion of a billing period after cancellation.
- •Exceptions may be made at the developer's sole discretion for billing errors or duplicate charges. Contact us within 7 days of a disputed charge.
- •If a payment fails, access to paid features will be suspended until payment is resolved.
- •If a paid feature is permanently removed, affected subscribers will be notified and offered a prorated credit or cancellation without penalty.
5. Acceptable Use
You may:
- •Integrate LSD coordinates into your own applications
- •Use batch exports for your own internal purposes
- •Use the service for academic, research, personal, or commercial purposes
You may not:
- •Scrape or bulk-download the full DLS coordinate grid
- •Share API keys publicly or among multiple people
- •Use the service to facilitate illegal activity
- •Attempt to reverse-engineer, interfere with, or overload the infrastructure
- •Resell API access or build a competing pass-through service
6. Warranty Disclaimer
In plain terms: this is a personal project on personal hardware. Coordinates are mathematically estimated, not surveyed. The service may go down. We are not responsible for decisions you make based on the output.
7. Limitation of Liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL THE OPERATOR BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.
TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM USE OF THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF: (A) THE TOTAL FEES YOU PAID IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) CAD $50 FOR FREE ACCOUNTS.
8. Privacy
We collect personal information to operate the service. Our use of your data is governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated by reference into these Terms. Data may be processed outside Canada by our service providers (Stripe and Cloudflare, both US-based).
9. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the applicable federal laws of Canada. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of Alberta. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full effect.
10. Changes and General
- •These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and the operator.
- •Failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of that provision.
- •The operator reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the service or any feature at any time.
- •The coordinate methodology may change in the future as additional data sources (such as surveyed GIS coordinates) are incorporated.
